What’s New with MD Leadership!

Mount Doug’s Leadership program has started the year off with a bang! The first day of school was Leadership’s first event and with the sidewalk adorned by welcoming chalk art, the year was on track to be a success. As kids filled the Leadership Retreat - all ok for website - Sphia zhai, Katy Chen, Armel de le Fuentegym with excitement, leadership students stood with signs and smiles to welcome back each and every student.  Spirit Week was on next and students dressed up in pajamas, grade colours, and purple and gold.

To start October off, several leadership students participated in WE Day, a nation-wide conference in Vancouver, hosted by Free the Children. With many different speakers and performers, WE Day was an idea-churning event that made students think about the community. Exhausted students travelled back to Victoria, but their minds were bubbling with new ideas to bring to the school.

Leadership Retreat, an overnighter at the school, was run completely by the lovely student council. An abundance of team building games and activities ensured the night was filled with laughter and connection-making. The retreat wrapped up with memories that will last a lifetime and a strong leadership group set on making this year the best yet!

At the end of October, our Foreign Affairs ministry hosted the WE Scare Hunger Campaign, a food drive for the Mustard Seed. Each class collected non-perishable food items and the class that collected the most won a yummy prize. Halloween Connor Harrison and Zach UddenbergThe Halloween Dance rounded out the month and was a huge success. Students dressed up in their favorite costumes and danced to classic songs such as “The Time Warp” and “Thriller”. The night ended on a high note, as students left with ice cream sandwiches and smiles on their faces.

November has also been filled to the brim with events. The Remembrance Day Assembly included moving performances from the Senior Band and the Choir while students stood proudly, poppies over their hearts. A special visit from Campus View Elementary grade two students put the finishing touches on the assembly as the cute little kids recited “In Flanders Field”.

The Fall Pep Rally was our biggest November event so it took everyone from leadership and more besides to pull off. Leadership students adorned the gym, foyer and halls with Ram’s heads, purple and gold streams, and RAMtastic posters. On the day of the event, leadership students created a spirit tunnel to funnel students into the gym. With pom-poms and bang-bangs, leadership students ensured that Mount Doug was ready for an amazing pep rally that had the whole crowd roaring with giggles. Performance highlights included the Senior Band, the Teacher Band and the Cheer Team. In addition a Teacher vs. Teacher relay game had students and teachers laughing out loud. The Pep Rally ended with a Fashion Show from Marketing to showcase this fall’s Mount Doug Wear. This is just the beginning for Leadership! There are many more events and activities planned and we are all looking forward to a great year!
