I hope and trust with the start of October that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that students have found themselves back in the routine of school and are making positive decisions towards a successful school year. We certainly encourage you to take the opportunity to discuss with your son or daughter their progress in school so far this year. With interim reports going home we hope information provided gives some insight as to progress so far and that you consider following up during the upcoming parent/teacher interviews scheduled for October 17th. Beginning October 10th at 7:00 p.m. you may book your appointments by visiting mtdoug.schoolappointments.com Once again, our school participated in the Tour de Rock, Cops for Cancer fundraising campaign. This year the school raised over $11,000 to this wonderful cause. A special thankyou
to our leadership students and teacher advisors for your hard work towards this year’s campaign. Congratulations to Mr. Meldrum, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Williams, and Mr. Ferreira for volunteering to have their heads shaved this year, along with several students. As you will see in this newsletter and the website, our students continue to make us proud in the classrooms, on stages, on the sports fields and in gymnasiums. Their successes are often a result of the significant adults in their lives and often it is the support
and direction of teachers that make such a positive difference. At Mount Douglas, I feel very fortunate to work with a very professional group of educators who are committed to the success of students. Evidence of this is the wonderful accolade one of our staff just received. Congratulations to Mr. Barry Janzen who was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching
Excellence. Mr. Janzen is recognized nationally as one of the top-ranked fifty nominees to receive this Certificate of Achievement. One colleague of Mr. Janzen’s describes his teaching approach as: “Like a modern-day Yen Sid, the imperious wizard from Fantasia, Barry Edward Janzen sits at a station in the middle of his classroom and renders his students spellbound as they travel through an online web of discovery, creativity and endless possibilities. But this wizard’s spells are always rooted in empathy and generosity
and often serve to build social engagement and relevance.” On behalf of the Mount Douglas community I would like to congratulate you Mr. Janzen, for this well-deserved recognition!
Respectfully,
Shawn Boulding, Principal
